SENSORIUM was the outcome of two artistic residencies/ SENSORIUM powstało jako wynik dwóch rezydencji artystycznych

I. Visiting Scholar at CCRMA Institute at Stanford University

where, during two-month research, I developed the technological “heart” of the installation.

II. Competition „Rezydenci w Rezydencji 2014” at ZAMEK Culture Centre (Poznań)

within which I carried out a project consisting in filling the empty monumental Clock Tower located in the centre of the town with loudspeakers and composed music. This brought the space, which lay dormant since WWII, back to life.

The project has been presented at a number of venues throughout the world, incl. CCRMA Stanford (2019), CMMR, Marseille (2019) STARTS Residencies Days, Paris (2020), Ars Electronica (commissioned for September 2020).

SENSORIUM powstało jako wynik dwóch rezydencji artystycznych

I. Rezydencji artystyczno-badawczej w CCRMA na Uniwersytecie Stanforda

gdzie podczas dwumiesięcznych badań powstało technologiczne „serce” instalacji.

II.  Konkursu „Rezydenci w Rezydencji 2014” w CK Zamek w Poznaniu

w ramach której zrealizowałem projekt. Wypełniłem pustą, monumentalną Wieżę Zegarową w centrum miasta głośnikami i skomponowaną muzyką, przywracając tę nieczynną od II wojny światowej przestrzeń do życia.

„…The installation is interdisciplinary. The spirit of holistic, integral perception of human emotions, intellect and physiology pervades the work. It combines, in equivalent proportions, the artistic, scientific, technological and psychological aspects…”

The idea and essence of the work is best presented by the synthetic voice which ushered in the visitor: „(…) SENSORIUM installation is an instrument-music player which you operate with your brain, skin of the left hand, and heart (…). We have built an instrument, which does not operate without you; it is you to be the installation’s most real, non-metaphoric engine. Sounds surround you, yet they do so in a singular way: their character follows the state of your mind.
The apparatus you are wearing lets you shape the character of the music that surrounds you. SENSORIUM is an intimate, single-handed experience of „anti-mass” character. An assistant guides you in silence along a complex route to the place of the installation. You enter a disturbing, austere space of a clock tower located in the centre of the town. You sit in an armchair on a platform suspended a few meters above the ground. You are surrounded by loudspeakers (around, above, and below you). The assistant puts on you the necessary apparatus – biofeedback sensors (pulse meter, GSR and EEG) – whereupon he starts
the procedure. You begin to notice a relation between your reactions and changes in music. You learn the instrument. First, you learn how closely your thoughts, emotions, and bodily reactions are interconnected. The division line between them obliterates. You control the changes of your emotions, which influences your body; which, in turn, by way of technology, influences the music. This, in turn, via the sense of hearing, influences you again.”
The installation operated for ca. one and a half years in the centre of Poznań as a small institution of culture which attracted several thousand viewers. Various aspects of the project were presented at scholarly conferences, thus placing the work in the art&science vein.

Milczący Asystent prowadzi Cię skomplikowaną drogą do miejsca instalacji. Wchodzisz do niepokojącej, surowej przestrzeni wieży zegarowej w centrum miasta. Siadasz w fotelu na platformie zawieszonej kilka metrów nad ziemią. Otaczają Cię głośniki (wokół, ponad i pod Tobą). Asystent zakłada Ci niezbędną aparaturę – czujniki biofeedbacku (miernik pulsu, GSR i EEG) po czym uruchamia procedurę. Zaczynasz dostrzegać relacje pomiędzy Twoimi reakcjami a zmianami w muzyce.
