MASZYNA_KONCERTOWA | CONCERT_MACHINE

Credits: Pracownia Telematyczna Akademii Muzycznej w Poznaniu (Telematic Workshop of Academy of Music in Poznań) and Poznańskie Centrum Superkompoterowo-Sieciowe (Supercomputing-Network Centre in Poznań) in collaboration with an_ARCHE NewMusicFoundation. Initiated by composers Jan Skorupa and Rafał Zapała, the project would not have taken shape without the synergy that developed between a number of people:

The MASZYNA KONCERTOWA (CONCERT MACHINE) is an open web instrument intended to inspire composers and listeners, as well as generate a specific telematic experience of audiences’ participation in concerts, while enjoying rights similar to those of the performers. The Internet webpage where concerts are (re)broadcast is our starting point, the primary function. However, the key element of the project is the interactive/interpassive status of those who perform and those who listen. This can take several forms. The MASZYNA KONCERTOWA is a tool to prototype this kind of events.

„The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed weaknesses of the Internet tools for musical communication. Indicative are the viral recordings in which subsequent musicians add their parts to eventually present a film which imitates joint music making online. Just an illusion of a concert situation, it changes very little: we still remain isolated, cast in the role of passive observers, and music is not created “live”. Musicians and audiences alike, we are all doomed to experience merely mechanical substitutes of the concert situation: broadcast (streaming) or rebroadcast (replay), as if the Internet were only a new form of a medium we have been familiar with for almost 100 years – the television broadcast. For us, it is obvious that web media are something more than just new television with VOD functionality.”

Although the idea of the MASZYNA KONCERTOWA originated in the composer circles, it may as easily be applied to create online literary or theatrical events, as well as performances, video projects, and the like.

MASZYNA KONCERTOWA to otwarty sieciowy instrument, który ma inspirować kompozytorów/rki i słuchaczy/czki, ma generować specyficzne telematyczne doświadczenie uczestnictwa publiczności w koncertach na prawach zbliżonych do wykonawców. Strona internetowa z (re)transmisją koncertów to nasz punkt wyjścia, funkcja podstawowa. Jednak elementem kluczowym projektu jest INTERAKTYWNOŚĆ/INTERPASYWNOŚĆ grających i słuchających. Może odbywać się to na wiele sposobów. MASZYNA KONCERTOWA jest narzędziem do prototypowania tego typu zdarzeń.

„Pandemia COVID-19 ujawniła słabe strony internetowych narzędzi komunikacji muzycznej. Symptomatyczne stały się wiralowe nagrania, w których muzycy po kolei „dogrywają” swoje partie, by na końcu przedstawić nam film imitujący wspólne muzykowanie on-line. Jest to jedynie pozór sytuacji koncertowej, który niewiele zmienia – dalej pozostajemy w izolacji, w roli biernego obserwatora, a muzyka nie powstaje „na żywo”. Muzycy i publiczność, wszyscy skazani jesteśmy jedynie na mechaniczne substytuty doświadczenia koncertowego: transmisja (streaming) bądź retransmisja (odtworzenie) – jakby internet był jedynie nową formą przekazu telewizyjnego – medium, które znamy od niemal 100 lat. Jest dla nas jasne, że media sieciowe są czymś więcej niż tylko nową telewizją z funkcją VOD.”

Choć idea MASZYNY KONCERTOWEJ narodziła się w środowisku kompozytorskim, to z powodzeniem może być wykorzystywana do tworzenia sieciowych zdarzeń literackich, teatralnych, performansów, projektów wideo i innych.
